Princess Kate revealed her cancer diagnosis today, in a heartfelt, personal video shared online.
In the clip, filmed Wednesday, she explained how she learned of her condition, what treatment she is getting now, how she’s feeling amidst the shock, and how she told her three children about what she’s going through.
Kate said that the diagnosis “came as a huge shock” to her and to husband Prince William, and that it has taken time to recover from major abdominal surgery in order to start her chemotherapy treatment, which her doctors advised as a preventative measure.
“But most importantly,” she said, “It has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte, and Louis in a way that’s appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I’m going to be okay.”
Speaking of her children—Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5—the Princess of Wales said she has been spending time with them at home, and has been honest with them about her current condition. She has also told them—and now us—that she is doing okay.
“As I’ve said to them, I am well, and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal, in my mind, body, and spirits. Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance, too, as is the love, support, and kindness that has been shown by so many of you. It means so much to us both,” she said.
Bazaar also learned, today from a source close to the situation, that Kate and William wanted their young children to be out of school when she made the announcement, in order to “shield them from the coverage of the news.” Easter holidays begin today in England.
Now, Kate said, she is looking forward to healing, and asks that the public give her time.
“We hope that you’ll understand that, as a family, we now need some time, space, and privacy while I complete my treatment,” the princess said. “My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy, and I look forward to being back when I’m able.”
